Colleen Stan is an American woman who became widely known for surviving a seven-year abduction and captivity ordeal. In 1977, when she was 20 years old, she was hitchhiking from her home in Eugene, Oregon, to a friend's house in Northern California. During her journey, she accepted a ride from Cameron and Janice Hooker, a married couple.
Colleen's ordeal began when Cameron Hooker kidnapped her and forced her into a life of confinement, abuse, and servitude. The Hookers held her captive in their home in Red Bluff, California. Often kept in a box under their bed, Colleen was subjected to extreme psychological manipulation, physical abuse, and sexual assault by Cameron, with Janice's complicity.
Colleen was led to believe that she was being watched by a large, powerful organization called "The Company," which would harm her and her family if she attempted to escape. This psychological control was a significant factor in her prolonged captivity.
Colleen's captivity lasted until 1984, when Janice Hooker began to fear for her own safety and finally revealed the truth to Colleen, helping her escape. Janice was granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for her testimony against Cameron Hooker, who was subsequently arrested, tried, and convicted. He received a sentence of 104 years in prison for his crimes against Colleen Stan.
Colleen's case has been the subject of books, documentaries, and television programs, highlighting issues related to kidnapping, psychological manipulation, and the resilience of human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
